Lassithi Plateau & Cave of Zeus Private Tour

Travel into the mountains of East Crete for a private route through Kera, the Lassithi Plateau, Psychro and the mythological Cave of Zeus.
On the way to Zeus’ home - Kera Monastery – Lasithi Plateau – Zeus Cave – Krasi

Leave the northern coast behind for the mountain roads and cultivated landscape of the Lassithi Plateau. This private itinerary combines religious heritage, Cretan villages and the Dikteon Cave above Psychro, traditionally linked with the birth of Zeus.

The archaeological site at the Cave of Psychro reopened in May 2026 after major safety and infrastructure works. Access conditions and operating hours can still change, so they are checked when the tour is confirmed.

Tour highlights

Kera Kardiotissa Monastery

Begin with a visit to the historic monastery on the approach to the plateau. Modest clothing is required, and the stop is arranged around current visitor access.

The Lassithi Plateau

Cross the plateau between fields, villages and mountain views. Rather than treating it as a road between attractions, the route allows time to understand the agricultural landscape and stop at a viewpoint or village when appropriate.

Psychro and the Dikteon Cave

From Psychro, the cave entrance is reached by an uphill path. Inside, steps and humid surfaces require suitable footwear. The site combines archaeology, geology and the myth that presents the cave as the birthplace of Zeus.

Krasi and a village stop

Finish in Krasi, known for its springs and monumental plane tree, or select another local stop based on the return route. This gives the day a quieter ending after the cave visit.

Who this tour suits

  • Travelers interested in mythology, landscapes and village life
  • Families with older children comfortable with an uphill walk and steps
  • Guests who want a cooler mountain contrast to the coast

Before you book

  • The cave visit involves an uphill approach and many steps; discuss mobility needs before booking.
  • Check current site access and admission before departure.
  • Bring a light layer because the cave is cooler than the plateau outside.
